Foundation "We, the People of Bulgaria" met up with the deputy ambassador of the United States of America

20 December, 2005
Sofia

Yesterday, 19th December, the Chairwoman of the "We, the People of Bulgaria" foundation council, Mrs. Miglena Koleva and Mrs. Nina Hadjiiska, member of the organization, met up with Mr. Jeffrey Levine, the deputy chief of mission of the US Embassy in Sofia, responding to his invitation.

The meeting lasted about an hour and a half. The conversations were held in Bulgarian.

Discussed were opportunities toward cooperation between "We, the People of Bulgaria" and the American embassy, in the framework of the organizational functions, oriented toward the goal to help the voice of Bulgarian people being heard and taken into consideration when decisions of national importance are being made.

Mrs. Koleva presented the position of the foundation concerning the observed evidence in the society atmosphere of the absence of the active connection between voters and their representatives in the Parliament. She paid attention to the fact, that on the electronic site of Bulgarian Parliament, for example, are not published telephone numbers or electronic addresses for direct contact between the elector and the person to whom they have entrusted power.

Mr. Levine expressed interest toward the activities of the foundation "We, the People of Bulgaria", its goals and network, as well as the active position toward the currently held negotiations toward mutual usage of the Bulgarian military bases by Bulgaria and USA.

There was a question about the practice of a foreign military contingent on Bulgarian bases for attacks toward third countries, and if this is the reason for the strong position of the foundation as represented on its site www.PeopleOfBulgaria.org. Respectively, Mrs. Koleva stressed that after research of the public opinion, the Bulgarian society wishes Bulgaria to keep its right of special approval for all military missions, directed to other countries from Bulgarian territory.

"We are a sovereign country. In the spirit of our constitution, decisions with national importance are made after debates in the People's Council. This is the way we understand democracy." Suggested Mrs. Koleva.

Mr. Levine paid attention to the fact, that having different opinions is not a problem. The important aspect, he said, is for these differences to be resolved.

He expressed interest to keep in touch through frequent communication with the foundation, which will set opportunities to comment on topics, concerning the positions of both countries, which Mr. Levine stressed that he could build on his knowledge of the Bulgarian society views outside the mainstream media information.

At the meeting present were employees of the American embassy, who will provide cooperation to the foundation "We, the People of Bulgaria" in the project plans, related to education with its activists in sister organizations in America.

It was highlighted that the projects, as well as all other organization projects, the foundation does not accept financing from outside donors. The foundation works only with the personal funds of its members, also it is supported through other Bulgarians, who live abroad, who wish to help the renaissance of Bulgaria. The key element in developing this politics is the fact that the foundation creates its activity through voluntary labor, completed by Bulgarians, who wish to make Bulgaria a better place for the future of their children.

Its members, in example, sent to an internship in the United States will live in the homes of Bulgarians, who already live there, and who will cover expenses for their guests' daily living. The lone option for the foundation "We, The People of Bulgaria" to raise funds is through social events, where the guests pay for their invitation. In this case the foundation avoids any opportunities to be taken into financial difficulties. Keeping this in mind and in order to provide as much clarity of the activity as possible, as promised to all members, the foundation requires at least two members to attend meetings with strategic importance.

At the end of the meeting, which could be valued as extremely successful and constructive, foundation "We, the People of Bulgaria" gave a present to the embassy with a message to the people of America.

The present is a painting, painted by Nikola Dimitrov, one of the oldest Bulgarian masters, born in 1893 and created in the beginning of the 20th century. The picture is within 30X40 cm in dimensions, it is named "The Woman with distaff" and represents a portrait of an elderly Bulgarian, dressed in a wonderful Bulgarian costume, symbolizes strength and eternity.

The message, accompanying the painting, which was primarily accepted by foundation members of all ages, profession, and political views, reads the following:

In memory of the dear sacrifices we made at the top of Shipka,

In memory of all great Bulgarians, who died for the independence of Bulgaria,

In memory of the thousands of unknown men and women, suffered by the outragesregimes in XX century,

In memory of our sons, who have never returned from Iraq,

In the name of our precious children, exiled around the world fighting for their economic survival today…

We will defend by all upright means our freedom, territory, culture and history,a heritage of the most ancient civilizations on European continent!

We are thankful for any support, which does not ask for our independence and dignity in return

With all our respect and gratitude to the people of the United States of America
